Here are a few of my design projects so far...
Pleated Tie and Belt Set
Inspired by classic Tennis skirts and Paris Hiltons quote that was repopularised by tiktok "A skirt should be the size of a belt..." An Original Belt and Tie, His and Hers set.I drafted a custom pattern to get the angled end of the belt that I wanted, wrestled with different way to create the knife pleats and had to settle on a singular pleat design which when sewed in a staggered fashion created the illusion of tennis skirt pleats.I sourced the buckle and grommets and tested a few styles and colours. The hardest part of this piece was figuring out the placement and order for the pleats on so they would hang well and still have space for possible belt loops. I decided to have them go shortestest in the front to longest in the back, this greatly helped how is sat on the body when worn.
For the tie I again had to come with a way to have pleats but not stray too far from the tie shape or the design language of the belt, I tried a few iterations, which I think are all viable, but I went with the simpler one that got the idea across easiest.I took a standard tie pattern and came up with a way to turn the waist ties from a womens' shirt into the slimmer fake pleats that create the front, I used the remainder of the skirt fabric as lining for the tie as a pop of lighter pink to bring the pieces together.Where the pleats meet was carefully measured out to be hidden by the knot of the tie and the pleats themselves are tacked down along the length to hold form while still allowing separation of the layers (as seen in the pictures).I took the pieces and styled some looks around them for a Valentine's Day tennis date photoshoot. The pictures came out wonderfully and it was a great success for my first self-directed photoshoot with another model.I also created the bag that featured in the shoot from an old hoodie, a pillowcase and a cord dress.
Day and Night Jackets
A pair of contrasting jackets, created as Halloween costumes but made to be more fashion-orientated and wearable outside of the Holiday. The Dayslinger Jacket: a modernised cowboy outfit, sandy fabric but with snap buttons.Loud hand-painted pocket graphics that conversate with each other. An embellished collar. Stitching detail on the front panels, a hand-stitched shoulder strap and holster feature which works as a third breast pocket and machine-stitched cowboy hat embroidery on the yoke. It says cowboy everywhere you look, fun, cool and eye-catching.
The Nightwalker Jacket: What would a vampire wear in present day? A loud and proud bomber!Originally designed as a Letterman jacket but reimagined as a bomber. The collar features a bite mark, the right sleeve has a coffin and the left a reflective cresent moon. Mirroring this the right side of the jacket is on fire as if the wearer is burning in the sun, all ideas inspired by common vampire lore.Featuring a bat image on the back with extending wings from the yoke onto the shoulders and upper sleeves to create a design that moves with the wearer, almost as if the wings are flapping. Under that the comedic slogan "Very Bad Vibes" in a bold italicised font, the vampire letting you know they're not to be messed with. A jacket perfect for nightlife.Missing from this version is a stake patch on the left side that pierces the jacket, where the tip would act as an inner breast pocket.
My voice in Menswear: 6 look collection
My voice in menswear: Cuts from Elsewhere.Purely a design project focusing on the process of research > design > development > final looks, aimed at exploring my voice in Menswear design and what exactly it is I'd like to add to the space. To explore this, I began with a questionnaire among my peers. Though the responses were inevitably biased, I did glean important information and found holes in my assumptions.Such as the overwhelming response that men love their leather jackets, it’s a classic and cool look for sure, but not one I’ve necessarily ever felt suited me. Why is that? What’s the leather jacket that I would want to wear, and what does it look like?Women’s fashion thrives on variety, playfulness and the boldness to express themselves in whichever way they see fit. Why does men’s clothing seem so restrictive? I want to reintroduce fun into menswear, breaking away from the standardised, uninspired options dominating people's wardrobes.Fit is most important when it comes to clothing, I aim to celebrate masculine silhouettes, emphasising broad shoulders and strong arms. But beyond structure, I am drawing inspiration from masculinity in nature. Male birds, like peacocks, are the flamboyant ones, using vibrant plumage to attract mates. Something that I find to be opposite in fashion amongst humans.Historically, men wore lavish gowns, heels, fur, and frills. Traces of this can still be found in other cultures, from traditional Asian and Arab garments to religious wear. Modern menswear has lost this and I want to reintroduce it.This is why I am pulling from what I know and see, my London is a multicultural landscape, and my designs reflect that. I’ve attempted to bring Japanese silhouettes, European traditions, African-American streetwear, French sensibility and more. I’ve woven in more feminine rounded shapes and cropped cuts, see-through and sheer materials, while maintaining functionality, and style for the modern man.I’m trying to redefine masculinity through contrast, strength meets softness, structure meets flow. And a little playfulness. Men deserve clothing that dares to be noticed without sacrificing wearability or confidence. Pieces that make people pause and grant intrigue. This project is a call to be expressive and free in men's fashion.
